DAVY LAMP
A Traditional Welsh Coal Miner`s Lamp.
Paint Shop Pro Tutorials by Karen
I Love traditional Welsh artifacts and collectors items.
My husband has got a lovely old traditional coal miner`s lamp,
known as a "Davy Lamp" after it`s inventor.
I thought it would be nice to make a digital version but I couldn`t find a tutorial.
So I took a photo of my husband`s lamp and made a graphic of it... then this tutorial was born...
Before we begin you will need to download my files...

Put the "kktfbigred" tube into your tubes folder, the "kkgbrass" gradient into your gradients folder, the folder of selections into your selections folder,
and the "kkglass" into a folder of your choice.
Ready ? ... Let`s begin...

Start a new image as in fig 1.
We are making our lamp rather large because some of the selections to fill would be very small otherwise, you will be able to size your finished lamp to your preference.

Next set your foreground to gradient and load my "kkgbrass" gradient as in fig 2
Open the "kkglass" image, copy it (edit / copy ) and minimise it.
Set your background to solid fill and load colour #E0DDC8.
Now add a new layer ( layers / new raster layer) call it "base 1) (fig 3)
Go selections / load from disk and open "kkdlbase1.sel"
Activate your flood fill tool and left click the selection to fill with brass gradient.
Now go effects / 3D effects / inner bevel and apply as fig 4.
Deselect and add a new layer (layers / new raster layer) call it "base 2)
go to selections / load from disk and open "kkdlbase2.sel".
Left click flood fill and repeat previous inner bevel. Go layers / arrange / move down then deselect (selections / select none).

Add a new layer and call it "base 3", load "kkdlbase3.sel" and repeat previous
flood fill and inner bevel then deselect.

Add a new layer and call it "base 4", load "kkdlbase4.sel" and repeat flood fill and inner bevel as before. Go layers / arrange / move down then deselect.

Add a new layer and call it "base main", load "kkdlbasemain.sel" and repeat the flood fill and inner bevel as before. Go layers / arrange / move down and deselect.

Add a new layer and call it "inner 1" load "kkdlinner1.sel" and repeat the flood fill and inner bevel as before, then move the layer down as before and deselect.

Add a new layer and call it "inner 2", load "kkdlinner2.sel" and repeat the flood fill as before, now go effects / 3D effects / inner bevel and apply as in fig 5.
Deselect and add a new layer, call it "wick 1", load "kkdlwick1.sel", repeat the flood fill and previous inner bevel as before the deselect.

Add a new layer and call it "cage", load "kkdlcage.sel", repeat flood fill then
apply inner bevel as in fig 6.
Now go layers / arrange / bring to top then deselect.

Add a new layer and call it "wick 2" load "kkdlwick2.sel".
Right click to flood fill with colour #E0DDC8.
Now go effects / texture effects / blinds and apply as in fig 6a
then deselect.
Add a new layer and call it "glass". Load "kkdlglass.sel" then go edit / paste into selection ( you should have the kkglass file copied, if not, open it first, copy it and minimise it again then paste into selection.). Now go effects / 3D effects / inner bevel...choose "pillow" and apply in default settings.
Next go layers / arrange / move down (twice) then deselect.

Add a new layer and call it "main", load "kkdlmain.sel" and left click flood fill then go effects / 3D effects / outer bevel and apply as in fig 7.
Add a new layer and call it "vents", load "kkdlvents.sel" and repeat flood fill and then the effects / 3D effects / inner bevel - "pillow" on default settings then deselect.

Add a new layer and call it "top sides", load "kkdltopsides.sel" and repeat the previous flood fill and inner bevel then deselect.

Add a new layer and call it "top", load "kkdltop.sel" and repeat the last flood fill
and inner bevel then deselect.

Add a new layer and call it "hook", load "kkdlhook.sel", flood fill as before then
apply inner bevel as in fig 8.
Deselect then add a new layer, call it "badge outer". Load "kkdlbadgeouter.sel" and flood fill as before, now apply inner bevel as in fig 9.
Deselect then add a new layer, call it "dragon".
Activate your tubes tool and load "kktfbigred" and apply at 120%, use the mover tool to centre the dragon within the badge inner. Now go effects / texture effects / emboss.
Next go colour / colourise and apply as in fig 10 then deselect.
Add a new layer and call it "rivet 1", load "kkdlrivet1.sel" then flood fill as before.
Apply inner bevel as in fig 11 then deselect.
Add a new layer and call it "rivet 2", load "kkdlrivet2.sel" and repeat previous flood fill and inner bevel then deselect.

Now go layers / merge / merge visible, resize your lamp to your preference
(image / resize...) then go effects / sharpen / sharpen more.
If you feel a little adventurous, why not add a flame, you could even animate it!
( I was going to put this on the tutorial but thought it was long enough!)

That`s it... your very own Davy lamp!
Tube it, save as psp image, enjoy...
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial which was written for PSP7 but should adapt for other versions.
