ANIMATED LAVA LAMP |
Paint Shop Pro Tutorials by Karen |

When I was younger, I was fascinated by my uncle`s hot wax "Lava Lamp". They have recently become popular again, and now my children are fascinated by them too... When they got one each for christmas last year, I took a photo of one and made an animated digital version to have as adoptions on my own website. I have had many people ask how I made them, so here`s how... Before we begin, you will need my files, CLICK HERE to download. You can just unzip the entire folder into your favourite location on your computer, there is no need to upload anything into psp - but it will make life easier for you to work direct from the folder supplied. |
Ready?... OK, Let`s go... Start a new image as in fig 1 |

Open up "kktflava" psp image, then (one at a time) open up "kktfblob", "kktfblob2",
"kktfblob3", "kktfblob4" and "kktfblob5"... copy each in turn (edit /
copy) then paste (edit / paste as new layer) into the blue part of the lamp, (closing each one after doing so.)... (fig 2) |

Hold down your "shift" key and hit the "D" key twice, so you have 3 copies altogether. Working on one copy at a time, start with the top copy, use the mover tool to rearrange the "blobs" so you have something like fig 3. |

Go layers / merge / merge visible and save as psp image in your lavalamp folder. Now work on the next copy- move the blobs around with the mover tool so you have something like fig 4 |

Now activate your retouch tool and set it as fig 5 and 6 |

Use the retouch tool to alter the shape and size of the blobs and to remove any "flat" edges. ( you are working in layers, the quickest way to swap layers to alter a blob would be to click on the blob you want with the mover tool... this brings that layer to the top, then you can use the retouch tool on that blob.) You need something like fig 7 |

Merge all visible layers and save as before (remember to give it a different name to the first one!) Now repeat the previous process for the third copy, this time also spread the blobs
out a bit and make them a bit bigger than before, also try to make them look
like they are trying to join up- until you have something like fig 8. |

Merge all visible layers and save it as before. Next open animation shop (file / jasc software products / launch animation shop) when animation shop opens go file / animation wizard. On the first screen select "Same size as the first image frame" then click next. On the next screen select "Transparent" then click next. On the next screen select "Centred in frame" and "with the canvas colour" then click next. On the next screen "Yes, repeat the animation indefinately" and set "How long do you want each frame to be displayed..." to 100. Click next. Click "Add image", search for your lavalamp folder and select the first copy you did and click open, do the same for the second and third copy, then the second copy again. Click on next then finish. Your four copies should now be displayed together. You can see if you like the animation before you finish ( go view / animation)... if you don`t like it close the animation and go back and repeat the process, making any changes you want. Once you are happy with it and have your four copies lined up, go file / save as... give it a name and save in your favourite folder... That`s it... your very own Lava Lamp!!! |

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial which was written for PSP7 but should adapt for
other versions. Close window to return to index |
